In 2018 at least two out of five Assaults recorded by Police were FDV (Family or Domestic Violence) related.
Between 2010 and 2014, almost a quarter of males who killed their current or former partners were named in DVOs.
There were 8,830 victims of FDV-related Sexual assault in 2018, that is, victims who succeeded in proving the assault in Court.
According to the NSW Domestic Violence Death Review Team, 20% of Domestic Violence homicide victims are children.
I could site more statistics and you can read the source material for those statistics above by clicking on the image, for instance in 2018 in NSW alone over 900 boys aged 0-9 years were assaulted, 587 of those were assaulted by a family member. The point is that Domestic and Family Violence is a large and complex problem. It isn’t just about deaths, it isn’t just about female victims, and while things like Domestic Violence Orders are important they are not properly protecting the victims.
As as experienced family law solicitor I see the outcome of this family violence every day of my professional life. I am keen to be involved in primary prevention of the problem, as well as helping people after the fact.
I offer these seminars for free because I am a local solicitors who want to make a difference in my community. I want to start a conversation with these young people, get them thinking about respect and challenging disrespectful behaviour that they see, behaviour they have perhaps accepted as normal in their lives. I want people to critically analyse behaviour of themselves and other people. Ican’t achieve this in an hour, but I can start a conversation.
